Did you know that knowingly Releasing Refrigerants is illegal in New Zealand?

Why De Gas Old Refrigerators Anyway ?

Old Refrigerants Are Captured And Sent Off For Destruction

“In NZ If you release these refrigerants to the atmosphere you can be fined up to $10,000 per instance”

Refrigerants are used in air conditioning, refrigeration and cooling systems to absorb and release heat to maintain a lower temperature. However, some refrigerants like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) were found to contribute significantly to the depletion of the ozone layer. Ozone depletion causes an increase in the amount of harmful ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface, leading to health problems.

To address this problem, the Montreal Protocol was established in 1987. The protocol aimed to phase out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances, including CFCs and HCFCs. The agreement has been highly successful, and the ozone layer is slowly recovering. However, the replacement for these substances, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), has been found to be potent greenhouse gases with high global warming potential.

Global warming is a significant threat to the environment and human society. The Paris Agreement, signed in 2015, aims to keep global average temperatures well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels to minimize the impacts of climate change. The continued use of HFCs in refrigeration and cooling systems can contribute significantly to global warming, which can have catastrophic consequences for the planet.

Quick Refrigerant Facts

As of December 2012, it is against the law to release refrigerants into the atmosphere. This is because refrigerants found in refrigerators, freezers, and air-conditioning units can harm the environment. Instead, synthetic greenhouse gases (SGGs) are used as refrigerants. However, under the Climate Change Response Act (CCRA) 2002, it is illegal to release SGGs into the atmosphere starting from January 1, 2013. Moreover, refrigerants that contain ozone depleting substances are being phased out under the Ozone Layer Protection Act (OLPA) 1996. It is also illegal to release these types of refrigerants into the atmosphere.

Refrigerants are used in more than just cooling equipment: Although we typically associate refrigerants with cooling appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners, they are also used in a variety of other applications, including aerosols, fire extinguishers, and medical inhalers.

Refrigerants are potent greenhouse gases: Many refrigerants are classified as synthetic greenhouse gases (SGGs) and are extremely potent contributors to climate change. In fact, the global warming potential (GWP) of some refrigerants can be thousands of times higher than that of carbon dioxide

Join Us In Helping Industry Reduce Harmful Gas Emmisions

When it comes to replacing an old refrigerator or freezer, proper disposal is crucial to protect the environment and comply with regulations. Unfortunately, many people still choose to cut the pipes and release the gas, which can be extremely harmful to the environment and human health. That’s why it’s important to find a qualified and licensed technician like the team at Appliance Recycling Ltd to safely dispose of your old unit.

At Appliance Recycling, we offer refrigerant recovery services Auckland wide to ensure that all old refrigerators and freezers are properly degassed and disposed of. Our experienced team uses portable refrigerant recovery machines and equipment to safely remove the refrigerant from the unit. Once the refrigerant is removed, we ensure that the old unit is properly disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations.

In addition to our regular refrigerant recovery services, we also collect hazardous and high potential global warming refrigerants in approved cylinders each month. These refrigerants are then sent off for destruction through the Cool Safe Recovery program, which is designed to ensure safe and environmentally friendly disposal of these harmful substances.

Furthermore, we are expanding our services to cover the domestic appliance industry, and we have partnered with one of the largest retail chains as well as the Auckland Council to degas and decommission all old fridges that are returned as part of the sales process of new units. This means that even if you purchase a new refrigerator or freezer from a participating retailer, you can still bring your old unit to us for proper disposal.

It’s important to note that attempting to degas an old unit yourself can be dangerous and is now illegal in New Zealand. That’s why it’s crucial to rely on a licensed technician like the team at Appliance Recycling to ensure that your old refrigerator or freezer is properly disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. By doing the right thing and bringing your old unit to us, you can help protect the environment and prevent harm to human health.
